Raven Family History

George E. Raven was born August 20, 1867 and died October 28, 1948. His descendants now live in beautiful Lewiston, SC, a town he was instrumental in founding. He was a southern farmer by trade and took part in the agricultural growth of the area as well as raising sons and daughters who became contributing citizens to our fair town. His first wife was Victoria Carter, sister of Lillian Carter who was President Jimmy Carter's mother. His second wife was Bessie Gaston, born 1885. The Gastons trace back to Agnes of Navarre and King Philip III of Navarre.

George E. Raven's father was James Burns Raven (JB), born 1825, a farmer. He married Sarah Glenn Speer, born 1827. JB's more recent relatives fought in the Revolutionary war in addition to contributing supplies and materials to the Americans. JB's mother was a Stuart, related to the Stuart family of England back to Queen Elizabeth I of England. The Ravens came from Scotland and Ireland as well, landing in or around Savannah, Georgia, moving from there further toward Atlanta and on into South Carolina. Some went to Fayette County, Virginia where their plantation was burned during the Civil War.

The Raven family history photos were taken during the 1970s with a 35 mm camera from the copyrighted 1865 Raven Family Album. Many of the pictures in the album were original tintypes, so the B&W photos often include the frames and sometimes notations within the pictures..
